Only the other day I was shown a passport photograph of somebody I knew. On such occasions it is not generally polite or kind to say, „Oh, what an excelent likeness of you it is!” but rather to murmur comminseratingly, „I would have never recognized that as a picture of you; how simply frightful passport photos make one look!”. Why is that? Simply because the photo of us taken in a harsh, glaring light seems to show up every defect in hard lines and leave no trace of the poorly developed good ones! Everything we would rather people did not notice about us is revealed with unkind proeminence.
…But pay the photographer just a little more in order to have the picture „touched up” and then all your friends will exclaim happily, „Oh, what a perfect likeness of you at your very best!”…In fact [the photographer] is helping us to look as he knows we would really like to be, though not even the most skillfull art can induce beauties which are not there and make it still apear as „a true likeness”. It can, however, cover a multitude of defects and show us an inspiring picture of ourselves as we would really like to be.
What a message there is here for us! Again and again the Gospels reveal the fact that Jesus looked at people in a special way, not concentrating on their filthy rags or horrible leprous flesh, nor on the self satisfied smile of some and the marks of sinful living in others.

Va doresc o zi…de imortalizat si pus in rama!
